Nissan DATSUN: Its Emergence & Revival

Nissan, a Japanese automobile manufacturer is quite popular for its peppy and trendy designs. Datsun has been its automobile brand since 1931, but from 1958 to 1986, only the export vehicles were named Datsun. The brand was launched again in 2013 as a low cost option for the emerging markets. Did you know that earlier, the model was known as Datson. The ‘son’ was later replaced by ‘sun’ as an honor to the sun and also because “son” means loss in Japanese.

Some of the popular cars associated with this brand are Fairlady Rosters, 510 and 240z Fairlady Coupe. The main idea behind the re-launch of the brand in 2013 was its revival in countries like India, Russia, South Africa and Indonesia. Built by Kaishinsha Motorcar works, the DAT in DATSUN was named after 3 partners Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takeuchi. The first vehicle prototype Datsun Type 10 was launched in 1931, of which only 10 cars could be sold. Later on in 1932, around 150 cars of Datsun Type 11 were sold. Due to war and related global circumstances, car manufacturing of the brand stopped from 1938-1947.

In the 1960, many people were searching for an economical second car option and Datsun proved to be the answer. It entered the American market in 1958. In 1981, the name was changed to Nissan.

If you’re willing to buy a Datsun, it is not too expensive, especially if you can consider a used or salvaged option. You can find many online auto auctions which allow consumers to participate online.
